Artist Biography
Lo Key (Jonathan Thompson) is a Pennsylvania-born emcee, singer-songwriter, and one of the most influential and prolific artists the underground has ever produced. With a career spanning over two decades, he has been cited as a foundational influence by a wide range of artists across the scene and credited as one of the first artists to popularize mask culture in underground hip-hop. What sets Lo Key apart from his peers is an unwillingness to be defined by any single sound. His catalog moves fluidly between horrorcore, heartfelt hip-hop, industrial rock, new metal, electronic, and experimental singer-songwriter territory, often within the same era. While many artists in the scene found a lane and stayed in it, Lo Key has consistently pushed into new territory with each release, making his body of work one of the most varied and unpredictable in the underground. Beyond his solo output, Lo Key has been a central architect of several influential group projects, most notably Mission Infect, a long-running underground super group he founded and helmed across multiple lineups and eras. He has also been a founding member of Neon Sermon, an experimental group blending rap, metal vocals, and electronic production. Lo Key stepped away from live performance in 2018 but has remained one of the most consistently active recording artists in the scene, releasing music through his own platforms including listenlokey.com and Shadowland Shop.
